Sažetak:(from the create) The current volume emphasizes the adaptive value or purpose of the emotional experiences defining the clinical conditions. Thus, the clinical condition, rather than being the problem, is the logical outcome of the individual's personality attributes given situational demands. The specific goal of this volume is to present the value of a theoretical model that emphasizes clinical conditions in relation to their evolutionary adaptiveness as reflected in clients' personalities. This model will be helpful for students learning to conceptualize clinical cases and to practitioners devising treatment strategies. The model should (a) enhance practitioners' understanding of clients and the contributions of clients to their own clinical conditions, (b) improve selection of appropriate interventions, and (c) optimize therapeutic benefit in minimal treatment time.

Sažetak:(from the preface) This book attempts to bridge these bodies of scientific literature and practice by demonstrating the central role of personality and personality disorders in the assessment of patients within the context of court-related issues and problems. It illustrates how personality-guided assessment adds to what the psychometricians might call "incremental validity," what the social psychologists might call "ecological validity," and what triers of fact (judges and juries) might call "the truth." The material in this book concentrates on the assessment of adults. However, in a few sections, material related to the assessment of juvenile offenders is included, especially the assessment of psychopathy and violence risk assessments

Sažetak:(from the publicity materials) In Personality-Guided Relational Therapy author Jeffrey J. Magnavita demonstrates how personality theory guides his approach to psychotherapy. His empirically founded new model provides a flexible and evolving theory and approach to therapy that draws from more than a century of developments in the field of psychology. This book reconciles and integrates several theoretical viewpoints, enabling clinicians to conceptualize clinical syndromes by understanding the complex interplay of elements from the biopsychosocial model. Further, case illustrations demonstrate the theory, methods, and techniques of treatment. Beginning with an overview of the conceptual domains integrated here (affective, cognitive, defensive, neurobiological), and an explanation of why such integration makes sense, Dr. Magnavita moves on to describe his theoretical formulation, its component systems, the developmental progression, and several levels of treatment intervention, moving logically from the individual through the dyad, triad, and larger groups. The book culminates in an integrative chapter devoted to enhancing treatment synergy and a final chapter focused on empirical verification and future directions. This volume is part of the Ted Millon's Personality-Guided Psychology series.

Sažetak:(from the jacket) In Personality-Guided Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, George S. Everly, Jr. and Jeffrey M. Lating shed light on the role personality factors play in the genesis and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). With psychologically toxic events like airplane hijackings, terrorist acts, community violence, and natural disasters--an unfortunate reality in today's world--posttraumatic stress may be viewed as posing a public health challenge. Using Theodore Millon's personality-guided psychology as a framework, the authors provide insight into this challenging disorder. They discuss personality factors that can help protect against stress or increase vulnerability to stress. They explore the biological foundations of PTSD and offer practical guidance on how to assess for PTSD, how to incorporate an understanding of personality in the formation of the therapeutic alliance and in other aspects of intervention, and how to resolve trauma.

Sažetak:(from the foreword) It is toward the end of alerting psychologists who work in diverse areas of study and practice that the present series, entitled "Personality-Guided Psychology", has been developed for publication by the American Psychological Association. The originating concept underlying the series may be traced to Henry Murray's seminal proposal in his 1938 volume, "Explorations in Personality", in which he advanced a new field of study termed personology. It took its contemporary form in a work of the series editor, Theodore Millon, PhD, DSc, published in 1999 under the title "Personality-Guided Therapy". This portion of the Series, as its title indicates, addresses the use of personality-guided behavior therapy.
